The Toulmin pattern

The information:

CLAIM
A claim or conclusion that the argument seeks to establish.
DATA
Facts that can be appealed to as the foundation of a claim.
WARRANT
A proposition justifying that it is reasonable and appropriate to make the claim given the data: rules, principles, inference-licences, or what you will.
QUALIFIER
A reference to the degree of force which the data confers on the claim in virtue of the warrant.
BACKING
Assurances, without which the warrant would possess neither authority or currency.
REBUTTAL
Circumstances in which the general authority of the warrant would have to be set aside.

The arguments:

DATA, WARRANT and QUALIFIER together support CLAIM.

BACKING supports WARRANT.

REBUTTAL contradicts CLAIM.
