The Toulmin pattern
The information:
- CLAIM
- A claim or conclusion that the argument seeks to establish.
- DATA
- Facts that can be appealed to as the foundation of a claim.
- WARRANT
- A proposition justifying that it is reasonable and appropriate to make the claim given the data: rules, principles, inference-licences, or what you will.
- QUALIFIER
- A reference to the degree of force which the data confers on the claim in virtue of the warrant.
- BACKING
- Assurances, without which the warrant would possess neither authority or currency.
- REBUTTAL
- Circumstances in which the general authority of the warrant would have to be set aside.
The arguments:
DATA, WARRANT and QUALIFIER together support CLAIM.
BACKING supports WARRANT.
REBUTTAL contradicts CLAIM.
